Data science is a powerful vehicle for job creation and innovation across all sectors. As a leader in an evolving field, IVADO is committed to ensuring that the ecosystem it drives makes use of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> talents, and that the knowledge advancement and opportunities that result from this benefit all members of society equally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Diversity and data science<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVADO creates synergies between three main areas of expertise that are changing our society: data analytics, operational research and artificial intelligence (AI). Unfortunately, many large groups in our society, particularly women, are currently underrepresented in these areas. The lack of diversity in this ecosystem hampers excellence and sustainable development in data science, and poses major risks to innovation. The reproduction of biases and perpetuation of discrimination based on gender or ethnic or social origin are examples of these risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>A strategy identifying three main areas of focus<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to these various issues, IVADO is announcing its reference framework for EDI, the first actions of which were implemented in 2018. IVADO\u2019s approach is based on three interdependent areas of focus:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Area 1 \u2013 talent: increase the participation and influence of groups that are under-represented in data science to enrich the pool of talent and ideas that form the ecosystem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Area 2 \u2013 institutions: understand and eliminate the structural and institutional obstacles to the inclusion of these groups through studies and scientific careers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Area 3 \u2013 knowledge: strengthen the quality, benefits and social relevance of research in data science by taking into account diversity and bias issues in the production of knowledge.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Concrete actions to promote EDI<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The publication of this framework is an opportunity to review IVADO\u2019s efforts to promote EDI in its ecosystem:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of Area 1, IVADO supports activities, projects and programs specifically aimed at attracting, developing and increasing the visibility of talents in data science throughout their career:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Informing the next generation about scientific studies and careers: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/seur.qc.ca\/1-000-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1000 sciences component of the Projet SEUR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/festivaleureka.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eur\u00eaka! Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sifn-montreal.com\/en\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Salon International de la Femme Noire<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI training for women STEM graduates: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiforsocialgood.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI for Social Good Summer Lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internship program to support the next generation of African scientists with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexteinstein.org\/about-us\/who-we-are\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">African Institute for Mathematical Sciences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allocation of research funds to young researchers from diverse backgrounds: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vieux.ivado.ca\/en\/news\/press-releases\/appointments-to-three-frq-ivado-research-chairs-for-diversity-and-equity-in-data-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FRQ\u2013IVADO research chairs for diversity and equity in data science<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of Area 2, IVADO supports institutional and political changes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVADO appointed Professor Vincent Larivi\u00e8re, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca\/chairholders-titulaires\/profile-eng.aspx?profileId=3073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada Research Chair in the Transformations of Scholarly Communication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to conduct a survey of researchers in the IVADO ecosystem to better understand their perceptions and experiences related to EDI.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVADO supports researcher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9pVInqRYsPw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gita Ghiasi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose work focuses on gender and equality issues in science and technology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support for the creation and structuring of the Qu\u00e9bec Interuniversity Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Network, which brings together some 100 members from all the universities in the province.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of Area 3, IVADO commits to having its ecosystem of researchers and industrialists take into account equity in data science:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vieux.ivado.ca\/en\/trainings\/international-summer-school-on-discrimination-and-bias-in-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVADO\/Mila International Summer School on Bias and Discrimination in AI<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montrealdeclaration-responsibleai.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montr\u00e9al Declaration for Responsible AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which includes the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in the development of AI, and for the creation of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.observatoire-ia.ulaval.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observatoire international sur les impacts soci\u00e9taux de l\u2019IA et du num\u00e9rique<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (international observatory on the societal impacts of AI and digital technology)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Quotes<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt IVADO, we believe that an inclusive university culture stimulates thought and creativity and helps to attract, motivate and retain diverse talent.
