SUMMARY:IVADO-Mila Summer School on Bias in AI
DESCRIPTION:Algorithms\, and the data they process\, play an increasingly important role in decisions with significant consequences for human welfare. While algorithmic decision-making processes have the potential to lead to fairer and more objective decisions\, emerging research suggests that they can also lead to unequal and unfair treatments and outcomes for certain groups or individuals. \nThis Summer School is an attempt to engage multi-disciplinary teams of researchers and practitioners to explore the social and technical dimensions of bias\, discrimination and fairness in machine learning and algorithm design. The course focuses specifically (although not exclusively) on gender\, race and socioeconomic based bias and data-driven predictive models leading to decisions. \nA basic understanding of machine learning is strongly recommended. \nObjectives\n\nUnderstanding bias and discrimination\nExploring the harms from bias in machine learning (discriminatory effects of algorithmic decision-making) \nIdentifying the sources of bias and discrimination in machine learning \nMitigating bias in machine learning (strategies for addressing bias)\nRecommendations to guide the ethical development and evaluation of algorithms\n\nConfirmed Speakers\n\nBehrouz Babaki\, IVADO Post-Doc at Polytechnique Montreal\nFernando Diaz\, Principal Researcher and lead of the Montreal FATE Research Group at Microsoft\nMarc-Antoine Dilhac\, Professor of Philosophy at the Université de Montréal\, Chair Holder – Canada Research Chair in Public Ethics and Political Theory\, Leader of the Montreal Declaration Responsible AI Development Committee\nLuc Faucher\, Professor of Philosophy at the Université du Québec à Montréal\nGolnoosh Farnadi\, IVADO Post-Doc at Polytechnique Montreal\nMoritz Hardt\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California\, Berkeley\nEmre Kiciman\, Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research AI\nMargaret Mitchell\, Senior Research Scientist\, Google Research and Machine Intelligence\nPetra Molnar\, Lawyer and Researcher\, International Human Rights Program\, University of Toronto Faculty of Law\nDeborah Raji\, Engineering Science Student at the University of Toronto\nTania Saba\, Professor of Industrial Relations at Université de Montréal\, Chair Holder – BMO Diversity and Governance\, Université de Montréal\nPedro Saleiro\, Post-doc\, Aequitas\, Center for Data Science and Public Policy\, University of Chicago\nCynthia Savard Saucier\, Director UX at Shopify and author of Author of Tragic Design (O’Reilly)\nNicolas Vermeys\, Professor of Law at the Université de Montréal and Assistant Director of the Cyberjustice Laboratory\nRC Woodmass\, Founder of Queerit and Product Designer at Crescendo\nResearch Interns at Mila and co-founders of Biasly AI: Andrea Eunbee Jang\, Yasmeen Hitti and Carolyne Pelletier\n\nPreliminary Program\nDay 1: Bias and inclusion in AI\n\nOpening remarks\nKeynote and Introduction\nUnderstanding bias and discrimination\nAI and social justice\nThe tech diversity problem\nIntroduction to Machine Learning and automated decision-making (optional)\n\nDay 2: Fairness in pre-processing\n\nIntroduction\nBloc 1: Fairness in pre-processing (fairness in data)\n\nTechnical session\nCase studies\nHands-on\n\n\n\nDay 3: Fairness in processing and post-processing\n\nBloc 2: Fairness in processing/Fairness in design\n\nTechnical session\nCase studies\n\n\nBloc 3: Fairness in post-processing/Fairness in decision\n\nTechnical session\nCase studies\n\n\n\nDay 4 – Governance\, recommendations and future directions\n\nCommunity-driven initiatives:\n\nMontreal Declaration for a Responsible Development of Artificial Intelligence\nOther initiatives (TBD)\n\n\nBias in the private sector: Challenges and recommendations\nBias in the public sector: Challenges and recommendations\nClosing Panel discussion\n\nRegistration\nRegistration will open on March 11th at 12h00. \n\nGovernment and industry employees: $1500\nNon-profit organization (NPO): $400\nStudent: $200\n\nIVADO also offers fee waivers to eligible students\, which covers the registration fee for the Summer School. SUMMARY:AI for Social Good workshop
DESCRIPTION:NIPS2018 Workshop \n\n\n\n\nThe AI for Social Good workshop will focus on social problems for which artificial intelligence has the potential to offer meaningful solutions. The problems we chose to focus on are inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, a set of seventeen objectives that must be addressed in order to bring the world to a more equitable\, prosperous\, and sustainable path. In particular\, we will focus on the following areas: health\, education\, protecting democracy\, urban planning\, assistive technology for people with disabilities\, agriculture\, environmental sustainability\, economic inequality\, social welfare and justice. Each of these themes present opportunities for AI to meaningfully impact society by reducing human suffering and improving our democracies. \nThe AI for Social Good workshop divides the in-focus problem areas into thematic blocks of talks\, panels\, breakout planning sessions\, and posters. Particular emphasis is given to celebrating recent achievements in AI solutions\, and fostering collaborations for the next generation of solutions for social good. \nFirst\, the workshop will feature a series of invited talks and panels on agriculture and environmental protection\, education\, health and assistive technologies\, urban planning and social services. Secondly\, it will bring together ML researchers\, leaders of social impact\, people who see the needs in the field as well as philanthropists in a forum to present and discuss interesting research ideas and applications with the potential to address social issues. Indeed\, the rapidly expanding field of AI has the potential to transform many aspects of our lives. However\, two main problems arise when attempting to tackle social issues. There are few venues in which to share successes and failures in research at the intersection of AI and social problems\, an absence this workshop is designed to address by showcasing these marginalized but impactful works of research. Also\, it is difficult to find and evaluate problems to address for researchers with an interest on having a social impact. We hope this will inspire the creation of new tools by the community to tackle these important problems. Also\, this workshop promotes the sharing of information about datasets and potential projects which could interest machine learning researchers who want to apply their skills for social good. \nThe workshop also explores how artificial intelligence can be used to enrich democracy\, social welfare\, and justice. A focus on these topics will connect researchers to civil society organizations\, NGOs\, local governments\, and other organizations to enable applied AI research for beneficial outcomes. Various case-studies and discussions are introduced around these themes: summary of existing AI for good projects and key issues for the future\, AI’s impact on economic inequality\, AI approaches to social sciences\, and civil society organizations. The definition of what constitutes social good being essential to this workshop\, we will have panel discussions with leading social scholars to frame how contemporary AI/ML applications relate to public and philosophical notions of social good. We also aim to define new\, quantifiable\, and impactful research questions for the AI/ML community. Also\, we would like as an outcome of this event the creation of a platform to share data\, a pact with leading tech companies to support research staff sabbaticals with social progress organizations\, and the connection of researchers to on-the-ground problem owners and funders for social impact. \nWe invite contributions relating to any of the workshop themes or more broadly any of the UN SDGs. The models or approaches presented do not necessarily need to be of outstanding theoretical novelty\, but should demonstrate potential for a strong social impact. We invite two types of submissions. First\, we invite research work as short papers (4 page limit) for oral and/or poster presentation. Second\, we invite two page abstracts presenting a specific solution that would\, if accepted\, be discussed during round-table events. The short papers should focus on past and current work\, showcasing actual results and ideally demonstrated beneficial effect on society\, whereas the two page abstracts could highlight ideas that have not yet been applied in practice. These are designed to foster sharing different points of view ranging from the scientific assessment of feasibility\, to discussion of practical constraints that may be encountered when they are deployed\, also attracting interest from philanthropists invited to the event. The workshop provides a platform for developing these two page abstracts into real projects with a platform to connect with stakeholders\, scientists\, and funders.

SUMMARY:WiML 2018
DESCRIPTION:The 13th annual Women in Machine Learning workshop will be colocated with NIPS 2018 in Montreal\, Canada in December 2018. See the workshop website for details! \nMachine learning is one of the fastest growing areas of computer science research. Search engines\, text mining\, social media analytics\, face recognition\, DNA sequence analysis\, speech and handwriting recognition\, healthcare analytics are just some of the applications in which machine learning is routinely used. \nIn spite of the wide reach of machine learning and the variety of theory and applications\, it covers\, the percentage of female researchers is lower than in many other areas of computer science. Most women working in machine learning rarely get the chance to interact with other female researchers\, making it easy to feel isolated and hard to find role models. \nThe annual Women in Machine Learning Workshop is the flagship event of Women in Machine Learning. This technical workshop gives female faculty\, research scientists\, and graduate students in the machine learning community an opportunity to meet\, network and exchange ideas\, participate in career-focused panel discussions with senior women in industry and academia and learn from each other. Underrepresented minorities and undergraduates interested in machine learning research are encouraged to attend. We welcome all genders; however\, any formal presentations\, i.e. talks and posters\, are given by women. We strive to create an atmosphere in which participants feel comfortable to engage in technical and career-related conversations. \nNow in its 13th year\, the 2018 workshop is co-located with NIPS in Montreal\, Canada. A History of WiML posterwas created to celebrate the 10th workshop\, also held in 2015 in Montreal\, Canada. \nBesides this annual workshop\, Women in Machine Learning also organizes events such as lunch at ICML and AAAI conferences\, maintains a public directory of women active in ML\, profiles the research of women in ML\, and maintains a list of resources for women working in ML. \n

SUMMARY:Forum international Science et société

SUMMARY:IVADO/MILA Deep Learning French School
SUMMARY:International Congress on Personalized Health Care
DESCRIPTION:At the dawn of the twenty-first century\, the most recent research in molecular biology\, advances in genomics\, and the resources available due to technological advances in data management enabled the development of a more specific medical approach focusing on the individual genetic make-up and his or her environment. \nThis P4 Medicine (personalized\, predictive\, preventive and participatory health care) is expected to redefine health care management. However\, the application of such a medical approach also raises certain questions regarding technological\, financial\, ethical and legal issues\, as well as the integration of this approach into health systems already in place. The second International Congress on Personalized Health Care will be held in Montreal from September 23 to 26\, 2018 in order to review all these questions and to evaluate the utility of this form of medicine. \nThe aim of this important event is to bring together more than 800 specialists\, researchers\, academics\, clinicians\, managers\, economists\, representatives of patient associations\, ethicists and experts from the pharmaceutical\, biotechnology\, information and communication technology (ICT) in health and medical technology fields in order to share ideas and pool resources with regards to the development of personalized medicine.
