DESCRIPTION:It is with great pleasure that we are presenting the 12th IRIC International Symposium about Machine Learning Applied to Biological Systems that will take place in Montreal on October 23rd-24th 2018. \nThe rapid convergence of technological advances for high-throughput genomics and proteomics has created an unprecedented level of rich data sources in diverse biological contexts. The parallel development of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence approaches has likewise allowed innovative methods to discover meaning in complex datasets. This international symposium focuses on the intersection of these two domains and will offer a unique opportunity to hear eminent scientists describing their latest discoveries\, from both the biological and computational perspectives. \nWe encourage students to communicate their findings in the format of poster presentations to stimulate the exchange of ideas and promote collaborations. SUMMARY:IVADO/MILA Deep Learning French School
DESCRIPTION:From October 22-26\, 2018 (in French)\nÉcole IVADO/MILA en Apprentissage Profond (3e édition)\nL’apprentissage profond est une technique d’apprentissage automatique (machine learning) qui a considérablement amélioré les résultats précédents entre autres en vision par ordinateur\, en reconnaissance de la parole ou en traduction automatique. De nombreux autres domaines sont touchés par cette nouvelle technologie\, ou vont l’être.  Face à l’intérêt suscité par cette technologie\, et face aux besoins de formation\, IVADO et le MILA (le plus gros laboratoire académique au monde spécialisé en apprentissage profond et pionnier du domaine) offrent une semaine de formation du 22 au 26 octobre 2018. \nÀ la fin de cette semaine\, les participants seront aptes à intervenir sur des projets dans le domaine et auront le bagage nécessaire pour continuer par eux-mêmes leur apprentissage\, une fois revenu dans leur milieu de travail\, ou d’étude. \nContenu de la semaine\nL’École en apprentissage profond donnera à ses participants les bases théoriques et pratiques nécessaires à la compréhension des techniques d’apprentissage profond\, et ils en ressortiront outillés pour intervenir sur des projets faisant appel à ces techniques. Le contenu est plus orienté vers la pratique et l’application que la théorie et la recherche. Le contenu théorique nécessaire sera présenté\, mais il sera complété par une comparaison des bibliothèques classiques pour l’apprentissage profond\, par des présentations de scripts et de stratégies d’entraînement\, ainsi que par un retour d’expérience sur les problèmes spécifiques liés à la mise en oeuvre de projets d’intelligence artificielle en milieu industriel (infrastructure\, accès aux données\, résultats\, etc.). \nLe contenu de cette école s’adresse principalement aux professionnels de l’informatique (ingénieurs\, informaticiens qui sont au moins détenteurs d’un baccalauréat en sciences ou en génie)\, mais les professeurs et les étudiants aux cycles supérieurs en sciences ou en ingénierie (essentiellement ceux qui ne sont pas encore familiers avec l’apprentissage profond) peuvent aussi y trouver leur intérêt. \nUne connaissance minimale en programmation (idéalement Python) est souhaitable afin de bien pouvoir comprendre les tutoriels. DESCRIPTION:L’atelier thématique en visualisation de données est une formation de 4 jours (9-12 octobre 2018). Cet atelier est composé de théorie le matin et d’activités pratiques l’après-midi. Il se concentre spécifiquement sur le design des visualisations de données. La mise en oeuvre pratique sera sous un format web (javascript/D3.js). \nObjectifs\nÀ l’aide d’un certain jeu de données\, l’objectif est d’apprendre à concevoir et produire de façon efficace\, des visualisations pour répondre à certaines questions. \nSpécifiquement\, cet atelier vise à : \n\nFormer les professionnels et les étudiants au design et développement de visualisations de données;\nDévelopper une compréhension des principes perceptuels et cognitifs mis en jeu dans les visualisations de données;\nApprendre les principes de design d’une visualisation de données efficace;\nAssimiler le processus d’idéation d’une visualisation de données;\nApprendre la librairie standard web D3.js de production d’une visualisation de données;\nFaire un maillage entre les étudiants et l’industrie;\nFaciliter le réseautage entre les spécialistes d’un domaine particulier;\nEncourager le partage de connaissances interdisciplinaire.\n\nCet atelier se concentre sur l’aval de la chaîne de la science des données. Il ne vise pas à former à la collecte\, au nettoyage et à la mise en forme des données. SUMMARY:International Congress on Personalized Health Care
DESCRIPTION:At the dawn of the twenty-first century\, the most recent research in molecular biology\, advances in genomics\, and the resources available due to technological advances in data management enabled the development of a more specific medical approach focusing on the individual genetic make-up and his or her environment. \nThis P4 Medicine (personalized\, predictive\, preventive and participatory health care) is expected to redefine health care management. However\, the application of such a medical approach also raises certain questions regarding technological\, financial\, ethical and legal issues\, as well as the integration of this approach into health systems already in place. The second International Congress on Personalized Health Care will be held in Montreal from September 23 to 26\, 2018 in order to review all these questions and to evaluate the utility of this form of medicine. \nThe aim of this important event is to bring together more than 800 specialists\, researchers\, academics\, clinicians\, managers\, economists\, representatives of patient associations\, ethicists and experts from the pharmaceutical\, biotechnology\, information and communication technology (ICT) in health and medical technology fields in order to share ideas and pool resources with regards to the development of personalized medicine.

Her research involves vision\, language\, computer vision\, and grounded language generation\, focusing on how to evolve artificial intelligence towards positive goals. This includes research on helping computers to communicate based on what they can process\, as well as projects to create assistive and clinical technology from the state of the art in AI.\n\nMelanie Mitchell is Professor of Computer Science at Portland State University\, and External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute. She attended Brown University\, where she majored in mathematics\, and the University of Michigan\, where she received a Ph.D. in computer science.   Her dissertation\, in collaboration with her advisor Douglas Hofstadter\, was the development of “Copycat”\, a computer program that makes human-like analogies in an idealized domain.  Her current work is on “Situate”\, an extension of Copycat that interprets and makes analogies between real-world visual situations.  Melanie is the author or editor of five books and numerous scholarly papers in the fields of artificial intelligence\, cognitive science\, and complex systems. Her most recent book\, Complexity: A Guided Tour (Oxford\, 2009)\, won the 2010 Phi Beta Kappa Science Book Award. It was also named by Amazon.com as one of the ten best science books of 2009\, and was longlisted for the Royal Society’s 2010 book prize.   She is currently at work on a new book about the current state of artificial intelligence and the prospects for human-level AI.\n\n\n\nPanel\nBefore the poster session\, there will be a panel on the Montreal AI ecosystem. SUMMARY:2018 Industrial Problem Solving Workshop (IPSW)
DESCRIPTION:The Institutes’ Industrial Problem Solving Workshops aim to create mutually beneficial links between industrial researchers and their counterparts in academia\, with a focus on mathematical\, statistical\, and computational problems that arise in real industrial setting. Research workers with industrial and commercial concerns are invited to present one of their current technical problems. Leading specialists from the academic community study these problems in teams during the week-long workshop\, then present a summary the results of their study back to the industrial participants at the end of the week. The teams also prepare complete reports for delivery to the industrial sponsors. \n\nHistory and Mission Statement\nThe three Canadian institutes of CRM\, Fields\, and PIMS were established at several decades ago\, focused on the mission of advancing research\, education and outreach in all aspects of the mathematical sciences. The IPSWs in Canada began 20 years ago in Western Canada with the PIMS workshops\, and are loosely modelled on the “study groups” pioneered by the University of Oxford (see www.maths-in-industry.org). With generous funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council\, the IPSW and related events form a key component of industrial activity for the institutes. \nObjective\nThe goal of the IPSW is to connect industries with faculty\, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students with expertise in industrial case-studies. DESCRIPTION:Data is everywhere. Turning insight into action is a top priority for all organizations. Everyone wants to give a helping hand. Our challenge aims at bridging the gap between academics and professionals\, strategy and data science\, and organizations and promising talents. We want to pair data science\, technologies and creativity to build innovative solutions for a worldwide non-for-profit organization. The International Business Analytics (IBA) Challenge is a novel initiative aimed for students interested in using data mining techniques to create value for a non-for-profit organization inspired by their data. \nDuring the challenge\, students will be asked to think further than the insights gathered from the data. They will be invited to overtake the data science dimension by implying other aspects like data visualization\, data vulgarization as well as drawing creative and strategic business insights.  All of these aspects must be met within a defined budget. \nHosted for the first time in Montreal\, this competition will allow every participant to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and industry practices. It is a unique way for students to show their skills on building creative solutions based on real life data to generate value for an organization.

SUMMARY:Software Engineering for Machine Learning Applications (SEMLA)
DESCRIPTION:Polytechnique Montreal\, June 12 – 13\, 2018\nThe Software Engineering for Machine Learning Applications (SEMLA) initiative\, to be held on June 12 and 13 2018\, aims at bringing together leading software engineers\, machine learning experts and practitioners to reflect on and discuss the challenges and implications of building complex data-intensive software systems. \n \nFrom the early attempts in the late 80s (such as the MAIA project) to the most recent breakthroughs in applications of deep learning\, the human kind dreams of building machines capable of learning new tasks\, adapting to the environment\, and evolving. Yet this exploration poses important computational\, practical and ethical challenges. Failure to properly address these challenges in such software intensive systems can lead to catastrophic consequences. Consider\, for example\, the recent human toll incidence caused by the $47-million Michigan Integrated Data Automated System (MiDAS) (see Broken: The human toll of Michigan’s unemployment fraud saga)\, or the recent finding that simple tweaks can fool neural networks in identifying street signs (see Robust Physical-World Attacks on Deep Learning Visual Classification). \nThe increasing concern of machine learning impacting people’s lives found a strong advocate in Prof. David Parnas\, who expressed his concern in an ACM communication article. These challenges are also reflected in new IEEE standardization initiatives. With data science and deep learning becoming increasingly pervasive in the contemporary world\, it is now imperative to engage software engineers and machine learning experts in in-depth conversations about the necessary perspectives\, approaches and roadmaps to address these challenges and concerns. \nIn particular\, we are interested in (but not limited to) discussing the following topics concerning software-intensive machine learning applications“in the wild”: \n\nArchitecture and software design\nModel/data verification and validation\nChange management\nUser experience evaluation and adjustment\nPrivacy\, safety\, and security issues\nEthical concerns\n\nWe encourage and welcome experts from all sub-fields of software engineering and machine learning to participate in such discussion.

DESCRIPTION:Carrying on the success of the AI for Social Good Summer Lab held by the McGill University Office of Innovation in 2017 – OSMO\, McGill University & the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms will be running a 6-week 2018 Lab that teaches technical concepts in machine learning\, in addition to digital product development\, design and business development tactics applied all with the goal of solving a social problem. It is our belief that AI should drive innovation to address key societal challenges that impact the lives of millions of people. \nIt is also our belief that AI research and product development needs to be more inclusive. This has motivated us to create opportunities for women to gain training\, experience\, and mentorship in machine learning techniques and product development by leveraging various ecosystem partners in the Montreal technology and start-up community. \nThe objective of this program is to provide a unique opportunity for women to gain training\, experience\, and exposure to machine learning techniques\, product development\, and career opportunities in the technology and startup ecosystem in Montreal.
